I was standing up front close to where Landon was standing (he was in the back). He was looking around trying to find us and then it happened. He locked eyes on me and it was all over from there. He started bawling in formation and when they were released he came running to me with his arms wide open ready for that big mama hug. I can tell he really missed us. I think the entire experience was surreal for these kids. Being away from all that they knew -- their comfort and safe places. It really hit hard. I think it was also nice to know that the worst part is over.
They were released for the day. We could go off base or stay on base just as long as we got them back in time to be shipped off for the next round of training (AIT). This is where the real fun begins. First, we stopped over so Landon can see his grandparents. We all piled into our vehicle and ventured out to do some shopping, get food, and visit some must-see sites. Landon being Landon, he stocked up on some contraband before heading back to base. Of course, he had to reunite with his Switch, too. I mean, priorities. Also, Landon found a friend along the way. He loves cats.
It was such a great trip and so much fun spending time with him. I also enjoyed him singing The Star Spangled Banner for his graduation ceremony. That was a real surprise! I am so proud of this young man. He will do great things in his life, for sure.
