Virginia Vacation, Part 2: Cape Henry Lighthouse, Nightlife, Virginia Beach and the Fishing Pier

Cape Henry was interesting. Lots of history. It was located on a Naval base so we had to check in with a guard and give them our IDs. We then had to park and go through a tent with security to check our bags and get scanned for weapons. There is when they gave us a rundown of the rules on the base. One was to stay off of the beach or we would be arrested on the spot, no questions asked. Another one was if we see or hear loud explosions, not to worry and move on. There were plenty more, but you get the point. We waited for our bus to arrive. The bus was the only place during our trip that we had to wear a mask, thankfully. It was way too hot to wear one all day. And speaking of hot, the lighthouse was 130 degrees so nobody was allowed in. Fine by us!

The nightlife reminded me of when I was in my teens or early 20s on beach vacations. Lots of young people bar hopping, hanging out on street corners with friends, riding skateboards, riding bikes, in-line skating, loud music, and so on. Liam was pooped. He passed out early and Landon was talking with friends on his phone. Aaron and I decided to check things out. There was a fire-juggling man and a woman singing show tunes on the street. Being the tourists that we are, we stopped to watch and listen. In the short time we were down there, we were very entertained and in awe of everything. You can tell we don’t get out much. “Look, honey, people!” The boardwalk was awesome! I loved looking at all the statues and seeing people so happy. None of us had a great year, so it was really nice to see them enjoying their vacations. Overall, it was beautiful and tons of fun! I’m so glad we made the decision to get away.

The beach itself was great! It was very clean and well kept. They had lifeguards on duty throughout the day as well as 4-wheelers and trucks driving up and down the beach. The first thing that came to mind was Baywatch. We saw dolphins swimming and a shark fin (while we were in the water of all places). The boys kept inching out to the deeper part of the ocean. The waves were absolutely amazing! I told the boys to come back to where we were because my anxiety couldn’t handle it. Aaron kept calling them “shark bait”, which didn’t help me any.

The fishing pier was a nice touch to our vacation. I just love piers! I saw a toddler trying to fish like his dad. Is that not the cutest? We also saw fishermen cutting up their bait on a table to put on their pole lines. It was a fun time looking out into the ocean and watching them catch fish.
